Cannabis Addiction Treatment in Massachusetts

Our compassionate team helps adults across the South Shore and Greater Boston address marijuana dependence, co-occurring mental health concerns, and the underlying patterns that make quitting cannabis difficult.

Cannabis Use Disorder in Braintree, MA: A Growing Clinical Picture

Legal access has made cannabis more available and more normalized than at any point in modern history. In Greater Boston and across the South Shore, use has increased significantly since legalization — and with it, the number of people finding that daily use has become a dependency rather than a choice.

Today’s cannabis products are considerably more potent than what was available even a decade ago. Higher THC concentrations mean faster tolerance buildup, stronger withdrawal effects, and a higher risk of developing cannabis use disorder — particularly for people who began using in adolescence or who use daily.

Cannabis use disorder is also frequently intertwined with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and sleep disorders. In many cases, cannabis was originally used to manage these conditions — and over time, the substance became part of the problem rather than the solution.

Warning Signs of Cannabis Addiction

Cannabis use disorder can be difficult to recognize, in part because the substance carries less social stigma than others and because the symptoms develop gradually. These patterns are worth paying attention to — whether you’re looking at yourself or someone you care about.

Behavioral and psychological signs:

  • Using cannabis more frequently or in larger amounts than intended
  • Spending significant time obtaining, using, or recovering from cannabis
  • Strong cravings or preoccupation with using
  • Continued use despite negative effects on work, school, relationships, or mental health
  • Giving up activities that were once important in order to use
  • Persistent desire or unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop
  • Using cannabis to cope with anxiety, stress, sleep problems, or emotional pain
  • Feeling unable to relax, sleep, or enjoy things without it

Physical and withdrawal signs:

  • Irritability, agitation, or mood changes when not using
  • Disrupted sleep — difficulty falling asleep or unusually vivid dreams without cannabis
  • Decreased appetite or nausea in the days after stopping
  • Restlessness, anxiety, or physical discomfort when cannabis is unavailable
  • Increased tolerance — needing more to achieve the same effect

If any of this sounds familiar, a conversation with our admissions team is a low-pressure first step. You don’t need to have it figured out before you call.

Our Clinical Approach to Cannabis Use Disorder Treatment

Cannabis use disorder is primarily psychological in nature — and that means the therapeutic work is at the center of effective treatment. There are currently no FDA-approved medications specifically for cannabis use disorder, which makes the quality of the clinical environment and the therapeutic relationships all the more important.

At Trinity, treatment is built around the individual: what drove the use, what it was managing, and what needs to be in place for a different pattern to hold.

Full Day Treatment

Our full day treatment program runs Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. It provides the highest level of structured outpatient care we offer — individual therapy, group therapy, clinical skills work, and wellness activities woven throughout the day.

This level of care is particularly valuable for people with significant daily cannabis use, co-occurring mental health conditions, or previous unsuccessful attempts to stop on their own. The daily structure helps rebuild routines and coping patterns that don’t rely on cannabis.

Half Day Treatment

Our half day treatment program meets multiple days per week and is appropriate for people who are ready for focused clinical support at a reduced schedule. It’s a good fit as a step-down from day treatment, or as a primary level of care for individuals with strong external supports and a less complex clinical picture.

Evening availability makes this accessible for working adults, students, and parents who can’t step away from their daily responsibilities entirely.

Trauma-Informed Care

A large proportion of the people who develop cannabis use disorder were originally using it to manage something — anxiety, trauma, insomnia, depression, or chronic stress. The substance provided temporary relief. Over time, it became a dependency that often made the underlying condition worse.

All of Trinity’s clinical staff are trauma-certified. Trauma-informed care is not a module within our program — it is the clinical lens applied to every interaction. Addressing what cannabis was managing is as important as addressing the cannabis use itself.

EMDR Therapy

For clients whose cannabis use is rooted in or maintained by trauma — PTSD, complex trauma, or chronic emotional dysregulation — EMDR therapy is often a meaningful part of the clinical work. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an evidence-based approach that helps process unresolved traumatic memories that continue to drive avoidance and self-medication.

CBT and DBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has some of the strongest research behind it for cannabis use disorder specifically. It helps identify the thought patterns, emotional triggers, and behavioral routines that sustain use — and builds concrete skills for interrupting them. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) develops the emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills that make it possible to manage anxiety, stress, and discomfort without reaching for cannabis. Both are delivered in individual and group formats throughout our program.

When Cannabis Addiction and Mental Health Are Part of the Same Problem

Anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, and sleep disorders are among the most common co-occurring conditions in people presenting for cannabis addiction treatment. The relationship often runs in both directions: mental health conditions increase the risk of cannabis use disorder, and long-term heavy cannabis use can worsen or contribute to mental health symptoms.

Trinity’s dual diagnosis treatment model addresses both simultaneously in a single, integrated program. Clients are admitted under a primary diagnosis, and the full clinical picture — substance use, mental health, trauma history — is part of the treatment plan from day one.

For those whose cannabis use and mental health complexity both require intensive support, our day treatment for dual diagnosis provides the clinical depth and daily structure to work on both effectively.

Why People Choose Trinity for Cannabis Addiction Treatment

Founded by People Who Have Lived It

Trinity’s clinical philosophy didn’t come from a boardroom. Courtney Flood, our co-founder and Director of Operations, has eight years of personal recovery and spent years leading large-scale treatment facilities before building something she felt could be done with more integrity. That lived experience shapes the culture here — the way clients are spoken to, the way setbacks are handled, and the genuine belief that recovery is possible for everyone who walks through our door. When you come to Trinity, you’re not just a census number. You’re someone whose recovery actually matters to the people treating you.

Serious Care, Compassionate Support

One of the barriers to seeking treatment for cannabis use disorder is the fear of not being taken seriously — or of being made to feel dramatic for seeking help for something that’s legal. Our clinical team doesn’t treat cannabis use disorder as a lesser problem. It produces real suffering, real functional impairment, and real withdrawal. You will be met with the same clinical care and respect as anyone else who walks through our door.

Joint Commission Accredited

Trinity Wellness Group earned Joint Commission accreditation in spring 2026 — one of the most rigorous independent quality evaluations in behavioral health. It covers clinical practices, staff qualifications, and care protocols. For clients and families evaluating treatment options, it’s a credential that means something. Learn more about our founding story and philosophy on our about us page.

Small Program, Individualized Clinical Attention

We are deliberately a small program. The cannabis use disorder population is diverse — students, parents, professionals, people who have been daily users for years and those who escalated more recently. Treatment needs to be built around the individual, not applied from a template.

Built for People Managing Real-World Obligations

Evening availability, a flexible technology policy, and scheduling that doesn’t require disappearing from your life. For college students, working professionals, and parents across the Greater Boston and South Shore area, the ability to maintain your responsibilities while getting real clinical help is not a luxury — it’s what makes treatment viable.

Sustaining Recovery from Cannabis Use Disorder

Stopping cannabis use is one part of the picture. The cravings, the environmental triggers, and the underlying conditions that drove the use in the first place don’t resolve at discharge. Trinity builds aftercare and case management into the treatment plan from the beginning — not as a final checklist item, but as an ongoing part of the clinical work.

This includes continued counseling, alumni programming, peer recovery coaching, relapse prevention planning, and coordination with outpatient services. The goal is to leave with a real plan, not just a discharge date.

Ready to Talk?

Cannabis addiction does not always look like a crisis. If your use has become something you’ve started to question — something that’s affecting your sleep, your motivation, your relationships, or your ability to stop — that is enough of a reason to reach out. Our admissions team will meet you where you are and help you figure out what the next step looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trinity’s cannabis addiction treatment program is designed for adults 18+ across Greater Boston and the South Shore who need support that feels respectful, personalized, and free of judgment.

That includes college students and young adults struggling with anxiety or prescription misuse, working professionals trying to keep up with high-pressure responsibilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community looking for affirming, inclusive care. If you’ve been wondering whether a program like ours is built for someone like you, the answer is yes — you belong here.

Yes — and this is one of the most important clarifications to make. Cannabis use disorder is a recognized clinical diagnosis in the DSM-5. It affects approximately 1 in 10 people who use cannabis, and closer to 1 in 4 among daily users.

The defining features are the same as other substance use disorders: loss of control over use, continued use despite negative consequences, and difficulty stopping even when you want to. The fact that cannabis is legal in Massachusetts does not change its clinical profile.

For the majority of people with cannabis use disorder, structured outpatient treatment — especially day treatment — is highly effective. The research on outpatient approaches for cannabis use disorder is strong, particularly CBT, which has some of the most consistent evidence for this specific diagnosis.

Residential treatment is rarely necessary unless there are significant co-occurring conditions, safety concerns, or repeated treatment failures. Our admissions team can help you assess what level of care is the right fit.

Not necessarily — but it is worth examining honestly. Using cannabis to manage anxiety or sleep is extremely common, and it often works in the short term. The concern arises when the reliance becomes a dependency: when you find you can’t sleep or manage anxiety without it, when tolerance means you need more to get the same effect, or when stopping causes significant discomfort.

Our dual diagnosis model is specifically built for people whose cannabis use is tied to an underlying mental health condition — treating both together produces better outcomes than treating either in isolation.

In day treatment, most clients stay 30 to 60 days. In half day treatment, the range is typically 30 to 180 days. Many clients step down from day treatment into half day treatment as they progress.

The right timeline depends on the individual — your clinical team reviews your plan regularly and adjusts based on your progress.

Most major insurance plans include coverage for cannabis use disorder treatment as a substance use condition. The specifics vary by plan. A benefits verification call with our admissions team is the fastest way to understand your coverage before making any decisions. No commitment required.
