What is Expressive Therapy?

Expressive therapies (also called creative art therapies) are forms of mental health and substance abuse treatment that help patients express themselves through nonverbal, imaginative, and creative exercises. These activities may include drawing, painting, poetry, dance, or music [1].

These are considered “complementary and alternative medical practices,” which refers to non-mainstream mental health or substance abuse treatments. They are especially beneficial when paired with conventional, evidence-based treatments such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), or Trauma Therapies such as EMDR.

Expressive therapies can reduce cravings for substance abuse, help manage withdrawal pain, and is used as a supportive treatment for several mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and trauma.

Diverse Paths to Expression: Integrated Therapies for Healing

Art Therapy

Visual art therapies help patients explore their emotions, inner worlds, identities, and bring their feelings to life through physical works of art. These may include painting, drawing, sculpting, and scrapbooking.

Writing Therapy

Creative writing workshops can help patients in recovery organize their thoughts and express themselves in a creative, yet structured way. These may include poetry, journaling, and creative storytelling.

Movement Therapy

Dance and movement therapy help patients release pent-up emotions in the body, reducing emotional distress. This can also improve mood and help manage withdrawal pain by providing an outlet to release physical tension.

Music Therapy

Music therapy focuses on the power of sound to unlock complex emotions related to addiction and co-occurring mental health problems. It provides a non-verbal outlet and is particularly effective when paired with conventional forms of therapy such as DBT or CBT.
