Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Center in Braintree, MA

Our licensed CBT therapists help you restructure negative thoughts that drive addiction, develop positive coping strategies to alleviate cravings, and set treatment goals that encourage clear direction and motivation.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is one of the most commonly used evidence-based mental health therapies. It is the first-line treatment for several mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

It also has effective results in helping those in recovery restructure negative thoughts that drive addiction, set goals for treatment, and build positive coping strategies to relieve stress and alleviate cravings for drugs and alcohol. It is goal-oriented, short-term, and blends cognitive therapy (understanding thoughts and cognition) with behavioral therapy (modifying behaviors and actions).

During CBT sessions, you will learn how your thoughts influence your mood and behavior. You will also explore triggers with your therapist that drive symptoms of mental health problems and substance abuse. CBT may include homework assignments in the evening after you return home, such as progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, gratitude journaling, and mood tracking.

How Does CBT Work?

CBT works by helping patients challenge maladaptive thoughts and beliefs about themselves and the world. Some of the key skills taught in CBT that support long-term recovery include:

Day CBT Treatment Program

Each of our treatment programs provides patients with access to CBT and other evidence-based mental health therapies. Depending on the level of care, you participate in CBT on a daily, weekly, or bi-weekly basis. Some of the other services you will have access to in our CBT day treatment programs include:
Group Therapy
Peer-facilitated group sessions create a space for shared connections, fostering feelings of community and mutual understanding.
Trauma-informed care
with therapies such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, targets deep brain regions using guided eye movements and auditory stimulation to process trauma and reduce associated emotional distress. When paired with CBT, this can improve treatment outcomes for those who struggle with underlying trauma.
Family Therapy
Structured sessions with loved ones help improve family dynamics that can drive addiction and mental health disorders. The focus is typically on improving communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Holistic Activities
Activities such as yoga and creative arts help patients process stress or trauma stored in the body, relieve stress, and alleviate cravings for drugs or alcohol. These are especially effective when paired with conventional therapy such as CBT.

Conditions We Treat With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Depression and Mood Disorders

Nearly 50% of patients who struggle with depression and mood disorders respond positively to CBT. It is even more effective when paired with other positive supports such as holistic therapies, social support, lifestyle changes, and medication. CBT helps patients self-identify negative thoughts and teaches them how they influence their mood and behavior.

Anxiety Disorders

CBT helps patients confront and reframe anxious thoughts, sometimes incorporating elements of exposure therapy if necessary. It has varying rates of effectiveness depending on the type and severity of the anxiety disorder. Around 51% of patients who struggle with generalized anxiety report an improvement in symptoms. CBT emphasizes mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation to support those in recovery from anxiety.

Substance Use Disorders

CBT helps patients identify and restructure thoughts that drive addiction (e.g., “I’m not good enough”). This can help people understand why they abuse drugs or alcohol in the first place. CBT is also highly goal-oriented and teaches coping skills that can alleviate cravings, which can play a key role in relapse prevention. According to the National Institute of Health, CBT has a success rate of 60% in helping those in recovery prevent relapse and maintain long-term sobriety.

Stress and Anger Management

Although commonly used as a direct treatment for mental health disorders, CBT can also support those going through everyday challenges or situations that impact mental health. CBT can be used to manage chronic stress or reduce anger issues. Many people find that attending CBT during challenging times can help them develop the tools to overcome experiences with resilience.
